Modeling the Impact of Health Insurance on Retirement

This study will explore the effect of employer-sponsored health insurance and Medicare on the labor force behavior of men and women as they near retirement age. Evidence has accumulated showing that employer-sponsored health insurance plans do indeed influence the behavior of near-retirement workers, but little is known about the nature of these decisions particularly with respect to individual risk-aversion and perceived health status. This study will expand current research on the labor market behavior of workers nearing retirement and will enable researchers to simulate possible scenarios as the labor and health insurance markets continue to evolve. The authors will develop an econometric model in order to study the impact of the availability of health insurance on retirement behavior.
