The Pent-up Demand for Health Care Utilization of the Near Elderly When Approaching Age 65

We will investigate the amount of pent-up demand for health services in the population of individuals approaching age 65 with no health insurance or those who have insurance through the individual market. A special focus will be given to the sub-population of the near elderly who have chronic health problems. This study will use the longitudinal information from all waves of the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS). An analytic sample will be established to include all subjects who were age 63 in 1992, 1994, 1996, or 1998, and had follow-up information two years later (at age 65). Models will be used to address the endogeneity of health insurance and examine the effects of change in insurance coverage on the change in health care use.
